Christian Sampson: Sol Omnibus Lucet (BROOKLYN, NY)

Christian Sampson, Sol Omnibus Lucet, 2023. The School of Creativity and Innovation, Brooklyn, NY. Collection of the NYC Department of Education, Public Art for Public Schools. Commissioned by the NYC Department of Education, NYC School Construction Authority Public Art for Public Schools program, in collaboration with NYC Department of Cultural Affairs Percent for Art program

Sol Omnibus Lucet (The Sun Shines for All) is a site-specific glass artwork created by Christian Sampson for the lobby of the new School of Creativity and Innovation, Brooklyn, NY. Simple shapes in bright, luminous colors are playfully arranged across the vestibule transom to suggest phases of the day: sunrise, morning, noon, evening, and nightfall. To make the artwork, an ancient glass fusion technique was combined with a recent dichroic technology. Dichroic, from the Greek dikhroos meaning “two-colored,” refers to the optical process of splitting one beam of light into two of differing wavelengths. The resulting visual effect makes the artwork appear to constantly shift in color as viewers move through the lobby space. Sol Omnibus Lucet - an ancient Latin proverb commonly inscribed on sundials – offers a visual chronology of the day and representation of the passage of time that is unique each time it is experienced.
